We're glad you came by, but you might find what you're looking for elsewhere. TI-Basic Developer is not the site it once was. While its information on commands and other calculator features remains almost second-to-none, its forum, archives, and even hosting service, Wikidot, have been decaying for years. The calculator community would love to see what you're working on, or help you in your next coding adventure, but TI-Basic Developer is no longer the place to do it. Instead, you should head over to Cemetech (primarily American) or TI-Planet (primarily international). Both are active, well-established forums with their own archives, chatrooms, reference material, and abundant coding tools and resources. We'll see you there, we hope.

Map Generation

I just had a quick question. So, currently, I am working on a role-playing game for my TI-84+ SE similar to Final Fantasy. For map generation, I am currently using matrices. Aside from using the Disp command, do you know if there is a faster way to generate the maps because it is starting to get painful waiting for the screen to fill. Also, I would prefer using the Home screen rather than the Graph screen just because I think it's easier to use that. Anything helps, and thank you!

Try storing the maps in a string. To display it, use "Output(1,1,Str1" if you're using string 1. Also, try going to the maps pages on this site. There are at least two on this site. The "Compression" page is also helpful. I once made a platformer that displayed levels in under a fourth of a second by doing this.

Would the obstacle detection work the same with the strings, or is it completely different?

Check out the "Movement in Maps" page on this site. The summary of it is this: instead of accessing an element at (X,Y) with [A](X,Y), use sub(Str1,16Y-16+X,1). The sub command takes a portion of the string. For example, if you want to check for an "X" at (X,Y), use this: "X"=sub(Str1,16Y-16+X,1). Keep in mind that my short examples only work if Str1 represents a map that is 16 characters wide, the size of the home screen. Before you reply though, check out those pages I referred you to. I learned everything that I know from those pages.
