Recently, burr and I have been updating the program archives to utilize some new features that have come out since the last update in 2009. To sum it up:
- Uploading is much easier. This is the greatest advantage of the new system. Users are now directly confronted with an upload button on the edit screen rather than having to meander through the page's edit options (and inevitably getting confused) in order to upload their programs. This applies to images as well. Therefore, moderators are no longer needed for programs to be added to the archive.
- No more default image. In the old system, not uploading an image caused a placeholder image to appear instead. Now, not uploading an image simply shows no image.
- Rating is on a five-star system. Now, users can rate other programs on a 1-5 star rating system.
- Layout is updated. The layout of the pages is slightly different.
Currently the code is using a compatibility toggle that allows the old pages to be displayed in the new system, but such pages are still use the old rating system and contain a default image. Ideally, these pages would be converted into the new system, but I will leave it to the community to update them if needed; I will myself only be spending time converting the oldest pages since those do not display properly in the new layout.
Hopefully this change is beneficial. Feedback is of course welcome.
