We're glad you came by, but you might find what you're looking for elsewhere. TI-Basic Developer is not the site it once was. While its information on commands and other calculator features remains almost second-to-none, its forum, archives, and even hosting service, Wikidot, have been decaying for years. I dont get it

Sub( problem

for some reason, in one of my programs, whenever i use the sub( command, it doesnt seem to work. i cant use lists nor variables. the calc keeps on saying domain error no matter what i try. The string is 308 characters long and the numbers are never more than 308, so i dont see what could be going wrong. i used the same string and the same numbers on a different program, and it works perfectly. i know that the greek letters are not to blame, so what is???

also, when i typed in sub(Str0,L₁(X),1 and sub(Str0,X,1 it did not work on the homescreen
however,when i typed sub(Str0,L₁(1),1 and sub(Str0,1,1, it worked. what's wrong???

i dont know. the calc refused to think of L₁(X) as a number in the sub( command argument. i just put everything into 1 row with colons and for some reason it worked

I'm thinking X contained an imaginary part (even 1+0i will cause this problem), and you fixed that without realizing it, giving credit to the other coincidental alterations. But other than that, I'm curious as to whether the list had a formula attached, or whether the string was 308 tokens long – "sin(" has four characters in it, but it only has a length of 1. Combining lines wouldn't be a relevant fix in any situation, unless you wanted to display the next line in a string.

It's at times like this that I really wish we could do calculator VNC.

nope. im sure that all of the numbers were real

ex:

"abcdefghijklmnopqrstuvwxyzθñÑ...→Str0 
(1 char long each, no sin(, cos(, etc)

{1,2,2,3,4,5,6,6,6,9,7→L₁
fpart(L₁/3)3→L₁
For(X,1,dim(L₁
Str1+sub(Str0,L₁(X),1→Str1
End

The calc said err:domain at X=1
however, when i put the same thing in a temporary program, it worked perfectly. but it still said err:domain when i tried the sub( part on the homescreen
does the fpart( count as an equation?

The problem with fPart( is that sometimes the result of 3fPart(L₁/3 isn't exactly whole, but something like 1.999999999998. It still shows up as whole on the homescreen (because the calculator rounds the results it shows a bit), but it will cause problems with some commands that want a whole number for input.

Adding round( to the expression — that is, changing it to round(3fPart(L₁/3 — should fix the problem if it occurs in the future.

yeah, but the computer knows that it's 1/3 right? when i recall/pause the list, the numbers are all whole

technically it knows that its .33333333333333, even though it should be repeating indefinetly, and when you multiply that by 3, you get .99999999999999, which gives you your domain error

yeah, i just checked it and got the same problem, it happens the way darkerline explained it, if you go to edit lists, you can see they are things like .9999999999 and such

The calculator rounds numbers displayed when recalling to 10 decimals, and is rounding your .99999999999999 number to 1. Just follow the round technique and all should be well.
