I am in favor of keeping the Command Index and the Command Menu Map separate, while adding a link to the top of each page. Although the spirit of a Wiki is to continually update information, I concur with the founders to have three separate organization formats, the alphabetical index, menu map, and category.
This is because the alphabetical index and the menu map provide similar but different information. The alphabetical index provides all of the commands, all hyperlinked to their respective pages which provides more detail, in an aphabetical order. It serves the purpose of an index by redirecting members to commands. It is the definition of an index. Usually, knowing how to get to a command via the menus is half of the process. By redirecting members to the actual page, they can learn more about the location, syntax, and uses.
The command menu map serves as a quick guide. It does not include all of the commands. Plus, members who do not have the TI-84+CSE will not know which commands have been added or omitted. All the information in the menu map is accessible through the hyperlinks on the alphabetical index.
It is true that when updating the command only one page will have to be updated. However, two sections still have to be updated. This is the same as updating two pages since the sections are separate. Also, by combining the two pages, members may not find the menu map at the bottom.
By having a link at the top of each separate page, members will know that there are two different organizations they can utilize. You will not need to tell them to scroll down to see the other portion of the page. This is usually one of the better features of good websites. Pages are broken up into understandable categories without repetition. Simplicity and minimal scrolling are among those listed under usability here.
Both Silver Phantom and I would appreciate any input on this matter. Perhaps this discussion is too well concealed to members who do not know to scroll down on the long Command Index page and click the Discuss tab at the bottom. ;)
