Hey, my names Sam and I've recently just made some simple games on my calculator with my friends and I stumbled on this site. I thought I'd get involved and see what I can learn. I've never coded or programmed in my life before and don't feel like learning assembly yet but so far I've made a couple simple games that just output some random things that you try to shoot. I don't know, it's nothing impressive but it's really fun to think I've made a game! If you have any tricks I'd like to hear them. Oh and sorry if I'm posting this in the wrong place, I don't really no how to use these forums.

Well welcome to the TI Basic community! there are a lot of pages around the site that teach you everything from the basics to the fine details of programming on the calculator, just make sure you are in the right section (TI-83 includes the TI-84 also). as far as posting in the forums, the same things goes. just remember to search the site, then the forums before asking a question.

Welcome to TI-BASICDev!

First off, take Silver Phantom's advice and search the wiki for things that confuse you. Second, try some other simple games, like where you are a * and you try to eat the + signs, or a simple paddleball game. Then try graph screen endeavors, like you being a point in a maze and trying to get out.

Last off, just come to the forums whenever you have questions.

So, once again, welcome Sam!

P.S., Why don't you check out Nicoskiy's newest programming group? Maybe you can join, and help us with programs, or the other members could help you with anything. It's "Games of The Future". We are working on futuristic's idea of a Ghost game.

Alright, thanks for the advice. I looked at the group and I might join if a real goal gets created. I don't think I'll be that much help, anyway. For now, I'm just gonna look at the tutorials and lurk. Oh, but I do have one question: all of my programs are on the home screen with a bunch of random moving characters that you have to avoid or get or shoot but if I add too much it gets super laggy (like 4 seconds delay) and I've tried using the graphscreen but it's not any faster. So, is the only way to make complex and smooth programs assembly?

Not necessarily.

Look at http://tibasicdev.wikidot.com/contra ! Before this game was made, it was deemed impossible to make a smooth platform game. Now, you can have a bunch of enemies on the screen at once and it still won't lag!

So experiment with new techniques! Also, show your code to us so anyone can optimize it. Basically, your program will take up less space and run faster!

You know, we are working on a good Cookie Clicker game for the TI-83. Maybe you can join in that project!

I already put up a demo. Maybe we can add better features to it. I wonder how we'd put it in graph screen mode. That could add support for Golden Cookies!

Cookie Clicker is a game that has spawned popularity throughout the country.

Go to this site to start playing.

Instructions: You click on the giant cookie. Notice how you get more cookies each time you click. When you get enough cookies, you can buy buildings (located on the right-hand side). These buildings auto-generate cookies at different rates. You have to buy as many buildings as you can, and you have to see how many cookies you can get.

Oh, and there are achievements if you do certain things, and upgrades you can buy to get more cookies.

The Golden Cookie I mentioned in my other post is a gold-colored cookie that appears at random times throughout the game. You get rewards if you find and click on one.
