I have a Programmable TI-82, now 21 years old. Today, I just got it out of the box for the first time and put batteries in it. The strange thing is, the polatities are correct, I double checked. The batteries are also good, I checked them with the meter. Is there any reason why it wouldn't turn on?
Well… I got another TI-82. It has the SAME problem. I know this is a bit off topic, but I have a TI-83 that goes black screen when you start it and doesn't go away, I'm not sure what it is, but I'm just going to call it the "black screen of death".
Is there anyone that might know something about this issue? Thanks
Well there definitely is the issue that your screen is messed up, like dust in the wiring or a loose wire. I doubt it's any software issue, though. If you dropped it a long time ago or something, assuming that you haven't used it for several years, it could have shifted some stuff and messed up the wiring/screen.
That's all I can guess.
The man shuddered as the shadow drew a glistening sword from his back. Creeping closer and closer with his pale eyes burning into the man, the shadow slowly raised his blade and before he could thrust it down, the man heard the shadow hiss something.
"The Shadow Clan's presence must be like a whisper. Always felt, but never seen…"
Honestly, programming the 82 compared to the 83 is about as different as coding the 83 compared to the 84. I'm not quite sure why you'd want to code on the 82 instead since there's nothing about it coding-wise that's better than the TI-83+/84/SE.
One advantage would be that it makes it easier to port the game between calcs. Of course it lacks string support and the order of operations is different, but it seemed easier to send a 82 program from the PC to a 83+ than it was to send a 83+ program from the PC to the 82, at least, by using older softwares. In fact, for 82 programs, from what I remember, when I used TI-Graph Link, all I had to do was renaming the extension. That trick didn't work the other way around and I'm not sure if it works in any way using modern softwares and cables.
I personally bought a TI-82 on Ebay (first model) in 2009 and when I don't use it for a while, there are missing lines of pixels. It gets fine after using it for a few hours.

this is about power, not features…
Fine blame me then :P
It's possible the thing is just so old it doesn't work, or maybe it was defective coming out of the factory, or maybe the LCD was, who knows? Weregoose or Xeda might. I sure don't. I just haven't figured out why it matters yet XD
Yeah I was replying to Roguebantha who was questioning why one would bother coding for a 82 at all.
I'm definitively thinking that the calc is either defective, the box or the calc itself was dropped at one point or another, received an huge impact (such as during moving) or the screen is just dead or have dusty connectors. If you check Cemetech KermMartian has repaired several calculator screens in the past, so he most likely have some tutorials around. Of course that's helpless if it's not the screen, but it's really hard to tell lol.
It kinda surprises me, though, since older electronics usually lasted longer than newer stuff, since newer stuff was made cheaper to break faster (usually after the warranty is void), so companies make more money from people getting their calcs replaced.
That said, as someone else mentionned, they usually go for $20-40 on Ebay with shipping. If you got that 2nd broken 82 mentionned above on Ebay or Amazon, check if the description says that the calc is in working condition and if that's the case, try to get a refund, then get another calc from a different seller.

It was still in the box (sealed), so it was marked as new. Someone bought it and never used it, they sold it on eBay, and it wasn't returnable. Oh well, it was only $10.
Last week I just got it out of the box for the first time, my dad had it new in the box sitting in the basement since 1992. I don't see how it could get droppedd
Who knows? TI-82's are, well, old. Old stuff breaks, even if it has never been used before. As I noted, it could have been bad coming out of the factory, or it may have been dropped or who knows? If you really want one that bad, go on ebay and by another one for between $20-$40.
