One of my friend's calculators started acting up: only the on button does anything. It will turn on, but that's it.
I can pull a battery while hammering the on button to make it ram clear, but it's the same thing: only the on button works.
At this point, I'm assuming it's hardware related, but I was wondering if anyone else had ever encountered something similar, or if anyone knew how the buttons were wired (i.e. the on button is wired separately from everything else so it's feasible that only it could work.)
Does the homescreen come up and the cursor show up but not blink? If that is the case, it is probably something wrong with the I/O port. It could definitely be some other hardware or software issue, though, so have you tried resending an OS? I think you have to press [DEL] while turning the calculator on or something to force the boot code to automatically go to OS receiving mode.

Yeah, it goes to the homescreen just fine, and the cursor blinks as usual. (If I hammer the on button, then the cursor stays solid, so I can then pull a battery to make it RAM clear.)
I've tried the Del + On to get it to load the "Install an OS" screen, but it doesn't work. I was assuming it was a stuck flag until I could ram clear it, but since it loads and crashes just fine, I'm assuming it's hardware related.
HAs anyone else ever had an issue of this sort?
So can you type on the homescreen, or is it just blinking and taking no user input. If so, it sound like a broken key hook which I have had to deal with many times.
I also got the OS install thing wrong. You need to be holding [DEL] when you insert the last battery, according to this.

I think a broken key hook could be fixed with a RAM clear though, which he says he's done numerous times. It sounds like a hardware issue to me.
I can't type; it just blinks. This guy didn't have any key hooks installed though (afaik).
I tried the del+last battery; no result. I'm assuming it's a hardware problem.
I'll be opening it up tonight, I'll post the results here afterwards.
I can't think of a software reason… Unless someone tinkered with the internal mechanisms, I can't see how this could happen… try sending a message to Texas Instruments, continue to regularly see if the Del+On will work, and try not to go Donkey Kong on your calc.
The man shuddered as the shadow drew a glistening sword from his back. Creeping closer and closer with his pale eyes burning into the man, the shadow slowly raised his blade and before he could thrust it down, the man heard the shadow hiss something.
"The Shadow Clan's presence must be like a whisper. Always felt, but never seen…"
