Have you ever posted something in a time were the site was very active and had it lost in a pile of other posts on a far-back page no one takes the care to read? It always seems ruse to say, "HELLO?! I have been waiting forever!" yet you never get your question answered. I think that maybe some customized scripting could solve. You could give a user up to 2 or 3 "flags" to pin to unanswered and important questions, which can be removed at will by the user. Then, there would be a list on the home-page and Forum:Home for other users to see and significantly help out. Also, if you are in a scrunch for time, you can skip the small talk and un-important questions and quickly get down to solving problems.

I agree, that sounds like a good idea! There are lots of unanswered posts that slip through the cracks. Unfortunately, Wikidot forums are rather limited in their functionality, so I'm not sure if that is possible to implement. Maybe Timothy or someone more knowledgeable with the Wikidot engine would know how to do that?

This would indeed be a good idea for separating the forums into legitimate questions and trivial posts.

The good news is that this can, in a way, be done; you can make a flagging system, but you cannot really limit the number of flags per user. I can think of a way to limit, but I can't guarantee it would work.

The bad news is that it requires rebuilding the forum from scratch. Essentially what happens is making a post actually creates an entire page, and then various tags organize the pages into viewable threads. The tags could additionally be used to "flag" a post. More efficiently, you could have a certain category of posts (say, the questions category) have priority in a display of recent posts.

I would be happy to make such a system if it is the consensus of the community that this would benefit the forums. Keep in mind that, once implemented, I would probably shut down the old forum system (so all current threads would need to be concluded). Also, my semester of college has started, so bear with me if it takes a while.

One thing that I thought of that might be worth adding to the redesigned forum would be links to related posts/topics. For example, if somebody posts about axe programming, it will list the most recent posts/topics that mentioned axe programming. Would that be possible to implement?

Yes; using the same method of Timothy Foster's method for flags, you could label a page as "Axe" or "BatLib." However, if you want to implement it into the site, you need to do it before the flags are made so that it locks old threads all at once and keeps as many possible open.

Yes, this can work as long as the thread-maker (or perhaps other users) tag the post with appropriate keywords. It cannot do it automatically unless Axe Programming were its own forum category.

If this were all based off of the category, it would defeat the purpose; you could just look in the Axe Parser category and find "related" stuff. If it was manually entered, it would work better; say I made a thread for graphing lists; another thread with a description containing "lists" would show up. Also, if a thread was not sufficiently answered, it could serve as an alternative to searching. I think an "Announcements" thread could brief users sufficiently on what to do.

Unfortunately, there are people (primarily newcomers) that don't always post their topic in the appropriate section of the forum.

Community Involvement

While we are discussing the forum, I think it makes sense to talk about ways to increase community involvement on the forum. Here are some ideas that I came up with:

• Highlight some of the individual sections on the forum, such as a popular forum thread, featured project, and a featured challenge/brainteaser.
• A "Better Know a Member" section on the forum, where we conduct a regular community interview with a different member.
• Have some select members act as community representatives, and be responsible for different areas of the community: welcoming new members, responding to posts, and encouraging inactive members to get involved.

What do you guys think? What ideas do you guys have?

I definitely like those ideas, but I don't know how the community interview will turn out. Will it be like something you did on TI-Story? If so, maybe after every interview we could lock it (once it has died down) and link to it on TI-Story in the person's page.

Forum Makeover

So far, I have had two people who seem directly interested in changing the forums to allow them to be more flexible. This would require a major transformation, so before I do something described in my previous post, I would like to take a site-wide poll.

User Profile Integration

(Yet) another idea that I had was integrating the individual user profiles. I know that Timothy and James already went through the arduous process of creating a user profile for every member of the site, but those profiles aren't really utilized in any real capacity (I don't even think most members know about their member page).

One area, in particular, that I think they would be useful is distinguishing moderators and administrators from regular members. The current Wikidot forum just displays every user the same way, so a user doesn't know who is important on the site or who they should go to for help. (Note: I know it will display a popup with their user info and member status if you click on their user link, but I don't think that's particularly effective.)

What do you guys think?

I thought of another cool idea; I do not know if it is possible using wikidot and it is a bit sketchy, but here is a summary of it:
Some threads for programming evolve into a bunch of small talk. What if a feature was added so that a moderator could select "Send to Open Topic" under "options" on a post, and then the site would automatically would carry the thread to open topic, entitle it whatever the name of the post was where the small talk began, remove any "RE:___" from it, have "(Continued)" added to the title (or prompt the moderator for a name if it was untitled) and write all of the thread in a quote format for others to comment on.
What do you guys think of it?

That sounds like a really useful idea :) It is rather complicated, however, so I don't know if that would be possible to implement.

That would be difficult to implement. It might actually be possible, but the method I'm thinking of would probably take too much time from moderators. I would cringe at the task of moving over ten posts of small talk to its own category one by one :P

Can it drag over the whole thread for users to see the context? That way, the only thing required would be a click to copy it to another type of thread selected and a title input; is that possible or too specific?

Char Box Integration

Another idea I had was integrating the char box characters into the new forum, so you could have them directly available when you are making a new post. I think the char box is kind of cumbersome and clunky, and it would be nice to make it more obvious what it is used for instead of having to explain its purpose again and again to new members.

Plus, on a mac, it is hard to cut and paste; you have to press [control] then click and when you paste, it has to be between two spaces or else it will highlight and replace other text. Could you make symbols available with a single click instead?

One thing that I have found irritating is this: a lot of users will make an entire account to ask only one question and leave. You cannot get any feedback when you ask questions or comment on something that they wrote. What if there post was given a pale graphic if they were an old user or if an "XP" was placed by there name like with the "M" or "A" ideas?

For old users, you simply need to look at the post date to determine the likelihood of getting a response. Also, we cannot determine whether or not someone is going to make one post and then leave until after all the answers have been given, by which point that user will have become old. The best policy here is probably to just be patient and wait for a response, and if they don't give one, move to different threads.

A timer of, say, three months would do the trick; if they have not posted (recent posts found in their profile page), their posts temporarily will have a pale hue until they post again. When a post is under "Recent," even if it was originally posted a while ago and someone just commented on it, no one stops to look at the dates. I think it would also help to determine accurately who is actually active.

I can make an inactive user's name pale, but I would like to keep the post clear for people who actually read them. Although, now that I think about it, I don't even know if it would be possible. I would have to nest ListPages modules, which Wikidot unfortunately disallows for security reasons.

I feel like this all isn't really worth it. I mean I know lots of communities whose forums are just like ours and work fine… If the question doesn't get answered then just ask it again, in my opinion.
I mean, all this stuff does sound quite nice, but if none of it gets implemented I think we'd be fine.

I think the flagging idea would have the same effect you hope to achieve with this. If we implemented anything like this, only one category would be needed: difficult. Easy and intermediate questions will probably be addressed and solved relatively quickly, whereas difficult questions will be known to be so when a majority of the active members struggle answering it. Such a question would need further review, hence the flags.

Currently, here is what I will implement:

• Ability to flag threads which will make them priority over other posts (useful if a thread gets lost in time or needs more time to review)
• Ability to categorize threads with keywords that are more descriptive than the category to which the thread belongs
• Display whether a member is a moderator, admin, or something else.
• Integrated CHAR box
• Ability to attach one file to a post.

I get the sense that about half the members are satisfied with the current system and the other half favor a new one. Therefore, I will make the new one and put it up to trial instead of immediately implementing it. My goal is to make it as easy to make posts as it is in the current forum while simply adding new optional features.

That sounds excellent and I like the idea to have one attachment to a post. So, we can attach a .zip with all the stuff that we want to a specific post, that way it isn't just all mixed with the file attachments?

Would it be at all possible to have an embedded login on this site, rather than redirecting to the wikidot.com domain? Or does wikidot have some policy that all logins have to be routed through their domain.

I know, but would it be at all possible to route those requests through the tibasicdev sub-domain? My problem is that I'm behind a web filter, and for whatever reason, this specific subdomain is not block, but wikidot is, so I cannot log in.

New Forums

I have finished the New Forum System enough for testing. Please see how you like it!

A few things you will notice:

• You cannot preview a post. This is due to the Wikidot coding I'm using. However, sacrificing this functionality means being able to make attachments and having the integrated char box.
• The syntax buttons do not show anymore. All of the relevant styling can be found here.
• Everyone has the member type "Member Type". I still haven't quite figured out how I want to code this; it isn't easy.
• I'm still figuring out how this is going to affect unregistered users (sorry Boba Foxx…), but I have ideas on making it work.

Please provide feedback so the system can better fit the needs of the community.

One thing that would be REALLY nice for me. Is it possible to make it so that instead of highlighting and copy-pasting the calculator symbols, you click the desired symbol and it shows up in the writing box?

Could you add something so that you can type replacements for such symbols and then it will replace those with the correct symbols? For example, if I typed in 5->A, once I posted it it would show up as 5→A *trying to think of a time when you would type -> without meaning an arrow*

Hmmm… Not sure I like the new layout; it feels a bit awkward. This is mainly because it's new and I don't like change; I'll get used to it eventually… Sorry for being the negative one.
Is there any way you can get previewing, the buttons, and the wizards working? I know you already said no, but… Wishful thinking… Perhaps post a link to the forum styling page where people make new posts? Or a popup, similar to the CHAR box in these forums.
This forum will still remain, though, right? If you add a "Recent Posts" box somewhere on the home page so that both forums are accessible, I could slowly get used to it.

I can put the buttons and previewing back (maybe previewing… depends on how the iframe behaves) at the expense of the new adding attachments feature. Currently, there is already a link to a pinned styling thread on the side bar, though I could put a collapsible block that shows a cheat sheet near the reply box.

This forum will remain up until the community decides that the new forum ought to be adopted; once a decision is made, one will stay and one will go, since having both simultaneously is redundant.

At the current moment, the trade off is this:

• New Forum
  • Can sort threads by category
  • Can tag threads with specific keywords (like "movement", "axe", "opcodes", etc.)
  • Can flag threads which have been overlooked (at the moment, can only be flagged by the thread-creator and moderators… effectively a stronger bump)
  • Can attach files to specific posts
  • Looks cooler (in my opinion), or at the very least can be customized to essentially any look
  • Distinguishes members from mods and admins (will implement; I know how)
  • Can see who's been active on the forums
• Current Forum
  • Has the formatting buttons
  • Can preview posts
  • Making a post jumps to the post you just made (I tried doing this on the new forum, but for some reason when I add an anchor to the URL, the page does not refresh)
  • Can fold posts (who even does this…?)
  • Can be manipulated from the Site Manager (which really doesn't affect anyone)

So it is up to the community to weigh the pros and cons. In terms of usability, I can put previewing back but only at the expense of the attachments. In terms of aesthetics, I can format the forum to be virtually anything. In terms of organization, the new forum has more options.

It looks a little funky to me, although firebug says the css sheet is hosted on wikidot, so that's probably why.
Looks pretty neat to me, although a tad bit cramped on the index. The reply box thing is a little odd in my opinion, since it seems like it it's a window from another page displayed in a frame.
Other than that, I like it a little better than the current forum.

@Mr Dino: I'm using something called Wikidot Data Forms, which is an alternative to the normal editing box you see when editing a page. It allows you to put multiple boxes that can do multiple things, hence the attachment form. For some reason, though, Wikidot has made it so you cannot preview a data form page, and they also (reasonably) have it set so that the formatting buttons do not appear.

@Boba Foxx: You are right; the reply box is a different page in an iframe.

@burr: I wish it were; unfortunately, that requires nesting ListPages modules, which is impossible. I was only able to get the most recent thread to work on the main board because each row is its own ListPages module, which I was only able to do because I knew exactly what categories to display. The number of threads is dynamic, so I cannot employ the same solution.

When you add support for distinguishing between different member types, I think you should also add support for different community roles as well (see community roles thread).
