Summary:

Hey. I know that there already is like a header on the site, but I made a logo incase you guys want it. I don't know how to display it though...

Well, i made a logo for the site and was wondering if you guys wanted to see it, but I don't know how to display it…can somebody tell me how or give me an email so i can give it to them to look at?

Anyway, it's pretty cool looking. It kinda looks like those metal template things on like a robot (if you don't know what I'm talking about, don't blame yourself…it's hard to describe…). Also, when I made it, I took the demensions of the current header, so it should fit nicely.

You could just upload it to a page, but you need to be a site member to do that.

Yeah - go to the home page (whether that be the Portal page, the 83 home, or 68k home doesn't really matter).

At the bottom of the page is a bunch of buttons.

One of them says, "Files". Click it.

Under what appears should be an option that says, "Upload New". Click it.

Browse to where you have the image stored, select the image, and click "Upload"

Congrats. You did it.

Hmm….well, I can't move it to the forums so now I made a separate page for it called "Logo" (where do you thing I got that idea from?). To see it, type in "logo" in the search bar up top. It should be the 2nd one down.

Yes, I like it. But I'm extremely fussy, is this a larger image shrunk? Because the "A" looks a bit distorted…

But otherwise, I like it!

I see what you mean about the "A"…It's becuase of an effect I did that makes it 3D-ish, yet it did that to it. I'll se what I can do =D.

I like it as well, but I'm not sure it fits with the color scheme of the site. Could you maybe use the site colors instead? Here are the colors I'm referring to (taken from the top header):

• dark blue background — #172028 | R:23 G:32 B:40
• light green text — #E7E9DC | R:231 G:233 B:220

Okay, I posted it. Just so you know, I used the EXACT colors that you told me to use…the gradient in the text is based off the text colors ( R:231 G:233 B:220 ) with the lighter blue in the circle in the header. Check it out =p.

By the way, anyone can give feedback or suggestions if they want…

Would you mind adding a couple more pixels to the height of your logo? More specifically, it needs to be 67 pixels tall to work with the current site header. Also, I noticed that the bottom and right two rows of the logo have a different shade of green that doesn't fit with the rest of the logo.

You mean that they are like darker? Or perhaps lighter?

Edit: Click on the picture to show the true size. I don't know whay it shrank.

Edit: That imperfection thingy isn't from the picture…it's from the site. In the normal picture, that isn't there. Click on the picture to see what I mean.

I can make one in the GIMP using the current image (That is, the picture behind the text).

EDIT: My computer's acting funny. What's the hexadecimal notation of the light bands in the current background of the top thing?

@krazy: You're right, that's from the site. It's strange that it shows up when using Firefox, but IE doesn't have any issues.

On a related note, when uploading an image, always remember to include the file extension in the name (i.e., logo should be logo.png). If you don't, when clicking on the image in Firefox, it will actually try to display the "code" that makes up the image.

JPEG and MS Paint….BIG no no!

You'll notice that saving images in the JPEG format on Microsoft Paint (any version of Windows, even Vista) will make the image a little bit blurry. Microsoft Paint reduces the quality of the JPEG picture file to make the file more compact.

How it works is that it saves the files with 90% of the quality in JPEG mode, because the image can be compressed more (made into a smaller file) and it "supposively" reduces the quality enough which is "unnoticable to the human eye". Clearly when Microsoft made the program, they didn't realise how noticable the difference is.

3 Solutions when using Microsoft Paint:

1. Save the files as TIFF (*.tif)
2. Save the files as 24-bit Bitmap files (*.bmp) or
3. Save the files as PNG (*.png)

All options save the image at 100% quality. BMP files are generally larger, TIF images are also large, and PNG files are like the new JPEG and are generally smaller. It is a "lossless compressible" format, meaning that it is the perfect quality image (and it supports transparency).

You can use external applications to save images in JPEG at full quality, but MS Paint is much more conveniant (besides, PNG is a pretty superior format).

It shrunk because you forgot to add the ".png" extension to the image name while uploading, and the Wikidot engine interpreted it incorrectly. I have renamed the files to how they should be, and now they display in their 1:1 ratio.

Burr, (or is it burr? Capitals or not?) perhaps you are just putting it up for testing at the moment and haven't got around to it yet, but you should link the picture to "http://tibasicdev.wikidot.com/" if the user clicks on it. Also, are we ditching "The TI-Basic Information Repository"?

Yes, I was just testing it. The reason I decided not to display the portal page link in the header is because I thought it would eliminate any ambiguity once you are on either section of the site. More specifically, that way you can't accidentally go back to the portal page, which has happened to me a few times. I didn't put any thought into including the "The TI-Basic Information Repository" text, since I was just testing the logo. If you guys think we should keep that text, that would need to be discussed with krazy.

Okee Dokee,

I just renamed the logos to their "should-be" name (I added the .png extension) and now the pictures are displaying on the logo page in their 1:1 ratio. So now Firefox can interpret the pictures properly.

After doing so, I noticed a couple of things:

1. The "I" in "TI" is lowercase. "TI" is an acronym, and so, all letters in an acronym should be capitalised;
2. The third image's gradient is a little bit pixelated

I was wondering, krazyness, because you have allready designed the logo and done all of the hard work, if I could have permission to use the sophisticated picture editing software on my computer to render your logo in a higher quality? To do so, I would need to know what font and font size you used. If you could give me these details, I would be able to quickly snap up a higher quality image with my, as I have put it, sophisticated picture editing software.

You think I care what you do to it? Lol. I used "Templet Extended" (you might not have it) as the font and I used a font size of 48. if you don't have "Templet extended", give me your email and I can give it to you.

Yeah, I got your message at 9:30pm last night (Thursday night). Near my bed time, I didn't have enough time to process the images then. Obviously I can't use my sophisticated photo editing program while I'm at school. My school does have the program, but we have restrictions on modifying the settings of the computers, and hence I was unable to install the font. Then when I got home, I was distracted by installing a distribution of Linux on my computer. So I'm sorry to have kept you waiting.

I have uploaded 3 variations, and one "headerbg" thingy if an Admin wants to try it out. So yeah, I'm done now.

Now it's time for feedback on what you (and others) think of the alterations.

I'm a fan of the third one. If we could make that 68 pixels tall, and have the right side fade over the course of 32 pixels to #172028, then it'd look perfect in the header area.

Okey dokey - I'm confused now. First it is suggested to have the picture 63 pixels tall, now it is suggested 68 pixels.

But hey, I'll do the work anyway. So you like the third one (I'm guessing you mean the third one I uploaded, AKA version 6)? I'll work on making it taller, and also a fade over the course of 32 pixels.

Now, when you say fade over to that colour, I'm guessing you mean by the end of the 32 pixels the whole verticle strip is the colour #172028?

63 pixels is sufficient for Opera, but not for IE/Firefox/Safari.

Actually, I wonder if the portal might end up looking funky because the navigation bar isn't present on there…

Edit: I like the second the best. However, could you make it a bit lighter, so it looks like it has light coming from an angle?

What's weird is that when we watch your TV shows, we can't really detect a foreign accent - it seems normal. But when we speak with an American face-to-face, you guys speak weird! Your pitch is so…varied!

Soccer is Soccer. We call your football Rugby (or Grid Iron). The only thing we call Football is "Australian Rules Football".

I'm surprised you think our pitch is varied as well, most people think it's monotonous!

Anyways, I've made the changes. That is, I have made the images 68 pixels high, and extended the images by 32 pixels in width, with a fade to the colour #172028. krazyness, what do you think of the modifications with lighting on the image you liked?

Err, Cheers is a way of saying goodbye down here…I've never met somebody who has greeted me that way before. (I interpret that sentence as "Goodbye mate, I'm James Kanjo, Goodbye!", which sounds very odd to me). It's equivalent to "see ya" and "laters", and is used as a quick goodbye =D

Well, all the Australians I know are form my summer camp, where the staff are drawn from everywhere. Literally.

So, I speak ona regular basis with Brits, Scots, etc. during the summer. I get a bit confused sometimes.

Okay, this si to James Kanjo, I know what I didn't like about the logo: the gradient. the gradient is supposed to be light in the middle and dark on the edges, not the other way around. The point of it is to make it look like there is a light source and that the image is 3D, not a "dark source". Can you by chance fix it?

I just added logo9 now, so you should see it on the main part of the site. I like the changes you made to the logo, but I think the text is rather large in comparison to the header — in fact, it's almost overpowering :D

I see exactly what you mean. I will shrink the text height for you. By the way, I think Weregoose wanted me to add that fading gradient so you wouldn't need to continue the gradient across the screen.

I can't do it now (11:26 is about an hour past my bed time) because I'm about to go to bed. When I wake up, however; I will be able to make the changes. Just to be nit-picky, do you have a preferred pixel height for the height of the words? That would make it easier for editing sake (saves me having to do it again and again).

Well, I just changed the header to be the Logo9.PNG with the fading gradient, and it looks like the gradient fades too abruptly. As far as the text size is concerned, I don't really have an exact size. I was thinking maybe half the size. This would allow you to put the "The TI-Basic Information Repository" text on the same line next to it, except make it smaller so that it is in proportion. I don't know if that makes any sense, but I think it does :D
