TI Connect doesn't work so well

I have a TI-89 Titanium calculator, a MacBook Pro running macOS 10.12.6, and TI connect 4.1.15. TI connect will connect to my calculator just fine, and I can use it like normal, but sometimes something randomly crashes (I don't know what) and suddenly the TI device explorer is unable to detect or communicate with my calculator. It disappears from the list. Sometimes when I plug in my calculator, it complains about being unable to communicate with it, but usually it just does nothing. Refresh also does not fix it. In System Report, I can confirm macOS can detect the TI-89 Titanium.

Is there a way to restore functionality after this random crash that stops TI connect from working at all? Rebooting seems to fix it, although it usually crashes again a few seconds after I connect my calculator…

This will sound super silly, but is the USB (on both ends) firmly in the port? Perhaps the communication is interrupted during a file transfer, causing the calculator to crash, and the computer to not detect it. Also, have you recently installed any programs that may have altered the calculator OS? That may be another issue causing the crashes. If none of those issues solves your problem, reinstall TI Connect, and hopefully, it works/works long enough to reinstall the 89T OS, which may also fix your problem.

I haven't encountered this issue with my TI 89 Titanium, so I can't really say much.

I got my calculator 3 hours ago. Yes, the USB is firmly in the port. The calculator did not crash, the OS is still fully functional while TI connect fails to detect it. Did I mention System Report shows the TI 89 Titanium as a USB device? I also cleared the ROM and RAM, and the issue persists.

Reinstalling TI Connect seems to have fixed it for now, though. I'll give you an update if it stops working again.

It persisted. After a few hours, I found out TI Device Explorer is once again not detecting my calculator.

Well upon doing some research, I found that this problem has been encountered by a lot of people. It seems as though TI hasn't made the software stable on Mac's, so your best bet is to get a Windows computer to do whatever file transferring you need to do.

Sorry for any inconveniences. TI has got to stop being lazy with their stuff :P

It's not stable on Windows either. I had to use a combination of Boot Camp, TI Connect (to transfer the program to my computer), TI-Edit (to edit the program), and TiLP (to upload the program to the calculator). I'm still a bit disappointed I couldn't find a better solution.

I figured out how to solve the problem. There's a process named "TI Connect Manager X" that needs to be killed after it stops working. The device explorer will restart it in a functional state once the device manager is started again.

Actually, your instructions there are incorrect. The shortcut you listed should be Command-Option-Esc, but that opens Force Quit, which is only for running applications.

Since TI Connect Manager X is a background process, it won't be listed in Force Quit. What you need to use is Activity Monitor, which can be found in /Applications/Utilities. Then, you can focus on the window and type "ti" on your keyboard (since the process list is sorted by name), select TI Connect Manager X, click the X in the top left corner of the window, and click Force Quit.
