Hey, so I have heard that the shout box was removed due to spam and lack of security. BUT, the shout box code is still alive!

No. This chatbox cannot be used. This was due to a major lack of security, and I am sure it will not come back.

If you look at the History of the site, you can see that a chatbox was started in December in 2008, only to be removed in February 2009 by Weregoose because people were using it to spam, and others to trick guests into erasing their calculator's memory. I don't think this site should do a chatbox, since anyone who has a question can ask as a guest in the forums. Chatboxes on this site have always been abused. If people can't be nice, then no chatbox.

I would think that a chatbox which features seamless User Integration with the registered members of this site would be okay. It would make it so that a guest could not use the name of any registered wikidot user, and also show that anyone who posted otherwise was a guest. It would be able to be moderated since it would have user integration with the mods and admins of this site (making an assumption there).

If such a chatbox exists, that would be great. But I have yet to see such a chatbox.

Most chatboxes that feature user integration cost money (or a subscription). To make one would most likely require PHP or Javascript (although PHP is more likely to be used), but I'm not sure if it's possible to add PHP to template based websites.

Well, I do know some php. But for me to make a custom one would be very difficult. It would require me to check the browser to see if they are logged in as a wikidot user, then fill the box with that name if they were. If they werent, I would need to check the name on the messages they are sending against the database of wikidot users so that they cant use a name thats already registered. I just dont have the time to make a custom one

I doubt Wikidot allows integration with PHP. We would have to have a website that is not template based (has its own server). Otherwise, I guess we could look at Javascript.

If this is possible to do, I might be able to help with the CSS…
