i know this is probably out of place, but i would expect a good number of the members here to be highschool students. i would like to ask: where do you get info about colleges other than the grades needed for getting into them?

Try the college's website. They usually have a section called "prospective students" or "general information".

i would but:

  1. colleges are like businesses. they dont say the complete truth
  2. colleges talk about themselves as a whole. looking through all of the pages is ridiculously tedious
  3. i dont know where to start

Is there any specific information you're looking for? If you're thinking of a specific field/subject, you could look at that department's site (which is usually much smaller and more manageable to look through).

Another thing you can do is talk to your councilor about colleges. They usually know something (at least about local or major colleges).

well, im hoping to become a cryptographer/"information security person", but most schools dont seem to have anything of the sort. they all have computer science departments, but they are all about data storage, like systems management and stuff like that. cryptography just isnt like med or law, where you can get a nice big book about schools.

also, since math is deeply intertwined with math, it could also be in the math department, but no school has crypto in math either.

i have talked about this with my guidance counselor, but she's basically useless for strange ideas. sure, she does her job and is nice to everyone, but i didnt really get any useful information from her. she gave me 3 pages of schools to look at, but all of them have higher expectations than i can provide

What you should probably be doing instead is to look for professors who deal with cryptography (e.g. Rivest at MIT) and ask them for recommendations, while expressing your interest in getting into the field of cryptography.
