Can you use strings as a condition in If commands

So I tried
"S"→A
If A="S"
"A"→A
If A="A"
"S"→A
But, I got an error saying invalid data type. Is there a way to use strings in conditions in if commands?

You have to use one of the 10 Strings. The real variables A-Z can only store numbers
