What exactly is the PTT LED on the 83 Premium CE? I looked up PTT on Google, and this is what I got from Wikipedia:

The partial thromboplastin time or activated partial thromboplastin time is a blood test that characterizes coagulation of the blood. A historical name for this measure is the kaolin-cephalin clotting time, reflecting kaolin and cephalin as materials historically used in the test.

But I do not think that is the correct definition for it because I'm talking about calculators, not blood clots :P
Is the PTT LED used to prevent cheating and/or invalid use on exams and such in areas that use the Premium CE?

It's called "press to test". On a test, a teacher would use the button combination LEFT+RIGHT+ON to get to press to test. At this screen, teachers can configure angle and stat diagnostics. From there, the calculator makes a environment where the use of programs and apps are not available.

As others have stated it stands for press to test and teachers use the LED to verify that it is in PTT mode. I believe there are exploits disabling PTT that would leave the light on for color calcs but I don't know of any open source code doing that.

You can learn about the gray scale PTT hacks here and here. TI disabled the Asm84CEPrgm token for this reason even when not in PTT mode, but still allow assembly code to be compiled and executed.

Not much of a fix if you ask me since anyone who might want to distribute exploits would have to access a computer and an assembler, while someone merely trying to write code in hex(like Xeda or our ancestors programming the EDSAC) would have a bit of trouble.
