It always gives me an error when I tell it to prompt either of those variables. I know it is possible to get it to because I've seen it before but the program is locked so I can't check it's code.

There does not exist a variable like V1 or V2.
You could do:
However, you can pretend to prompt V1, and V2, by displaying them as string, but store them into other variables:
:Input ''V1:'',A :Input ''V2:'',B
