I am on Linux and I'm trying to learn TI83 assembly (I have the original, not the 83+).
I have managed to get an assembler and linker working, and I can create and upload 83p files.
The problem is that trying to run the programs using Send(9prgmZASM gives ERR: SYNTAX. The program (which I linked with wabbit) is not editable, so I can't tell what is wrong there. I can view the .bin file in a hex editor, and when I type in the hexcodes manually (adding End 0000 End) it works fine.
Also, if I add an SOS header to the program, I can run it within SOS but not without it.

Any ideas? Does anyone else use Linux for TI83 dev?

Maybe a problem with the program. I am still trying to learn asm, so my guess is that when you typed on the computer, you mistyped something.

It's definitely not a problem with the program. One, I copied it from a tutorial. Two, it runs as expected in a shell. I just switched to Brass (from z80asm + wabbit) and I'm having the same problem. spasm doesn't work for some reason (I'm on Ubuntu 64-bit which could be part of the problem.) Although now that I found out Ion lets you do "cross-platform," it might be better to just use that.

Okay, my problem is partly solved…
I figured out how to make brass output unprotected programs as hex codes. To make it work, you have to add this to the end:

.squish
.db 3Fh,tEnd,3Fh,"0000",3Fh,tEnd

This adds the "End/0000/End" (the 3Fs are newlines). This works when the program is protected, but not when it is "squished" - meaning my programs will take up twice as much space as they actually need.
Any ideas, anyone?

you should probaly disassembe it, and then fix the header

however, most protected programs use shell libaries, and will crash whitout them

No, I'm talking about writing programs. They aren't using any libraries. If I could see the object code (the .obj or .bin, not the .83p) for some other programs, I could probably figure it out. Looking at other people's source, it looks like they don't need anything at the end because they're using a different toolchain. With brass, however, it definitely needs something, which it mentions in the documentation, but I'm not sure what yet.

And I found out you can replace the 3Fh in the code above with the more readable tEnter.

Ah, I found the answer: it can't be done. *sigh* It's possible to run unsquished programs without a shell (see my other posts here), but "squished" programs aren't actually supported by the TI-83. In order to run them, you need ZASMLOAD, which I couldn't even get to work. So basically, you should program for Ion if possible because it will make your programs portable to the 83+. For short routines, just don't squish them.
